What is Intense Pulsed Light?
Intense Pulsed Light is a similar but newer technology to laser, and is used for hair removal as well as other treatments such as Photo Rejuvenation. It is proving very effective and is fast becoming more popular than laser. Intense Pulsed Light is a system that produces a very bright pulse of broad spectrum light. The Palomar and Luminex machines we use at Smooth Synergy produces wave lengths of 400nm to 1400nm and 525nm to 1200nm respectively. These wavelengths are attracted to melanin (pigmentation in the hair). When the light is absorbed by the melanin, heat is produced, which results in the destruction of the cells that help the hair to grow.
How is the Procedure Preformed?
The area to be treated is marked out then the hair is shaved. If we don’t shave off the hair, the light would be attracted to the surface hair which would burn and in turn burn the skin. Once the area is prepared with clear conductive gel, the hand piece is held firmly against the skin and a pulse of light is emitted. The hand piece is moved across the area with each shot. The light travels through the skin and is absorbed by the shaft of the hair which contains the pigment melanin. Heat is produced in the hair and then radiates out into the surrounding follicle tissue, disabling the follicle cells. These cells normally produce new hair but are unable to when disabled. The dead hair shaft will gradually shed out of the follicle, this may take up to 3 weeks.
Can I have Intense Pulse Light Hair Reduction?
The ideal person for this treatment has dark hair and fair skin. Dark or very tanned skin runs the risk of pigmentation (skin colour) changes following the treatment. However, it is not impossible to treat individuals with darker skin. Grey and Blond hair can’t be treated. How many treatments will I need?
The Intense Pulse Light works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycles at different times additional treatments will be necessary. Generally it will take 5 - 8 treatments over a period of months, depending on where the treatment is being performed.
Are there any side effects?
After the treatment you can possibly expect a little redness in the area. This will usually last a couple of hours. You should use our ASAP or Ultraceuticals Daily Moisturiser plus sunscreen SPF30+ this will help to protect the area from the harsh sun. After 10 – 14 days you will experience the hair falling out in the area you have had treated.
Does it hurt?
Some people describe the sensation of the Intense Pulse Light Treatment as a ping from a rubber band on the skin’s surface, usually no more painful than plucking a few hairs. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Most people have no problems with the procedure.
Which areas of the body can be treated?
Generally any part of the body can be treated. Exceptions include areas in close proximity with the eyes, inner ears, and nose. The most popular areas for removal of unwanted hair are underarms, bikini line, upper lip and chin, face, back and chest.
